Barbells and dumbbells workouts are great for building muscle and strength across skill levels providing good form is followed. With the barbell you're able to lift more weight and progressively load more effectively to gain strength where as dumbbells are better for building muscle and endurance training. Barbell exercises are generally easier to do compound movements whereas dumbbell exercises allow for greater range of motion and make isolation exercises easier. One other factor is the additional equipment often required for the barbell exercises vs dumbbells where little else is needed other than the weights themselves.
